College is a major life transition – arguably one of the biggest transitions we will make in our entire lives. Not only is it a time of immense change, but it is also the first time in a young person’s life that they will have immense personal freedom and all of the ups and downs associated with that freedom.
During this transition, it is not uncommon for teens to feel:
- Lonely
- Overwhelmed
- Confused
It is a time when many teens are already going through mental health challenges associated with adolescence, only for them to now find themselves with less supervision, significantly more accountability, and faced with the choices of independence.
Teen Therapy to Help with this Life Transition
As parents of teens that are headed off to college, we want to make sure that we’re preparing them for the road ahead. One way to do that is, while they’re still in your house, putting them in therapy to work through their issues now in order to prepare them for the road head.
In this type of therapy, we can provide:
- Mental Health Treatment – Many teens do struggle with anxiety and depression during high school, and it often goes untreated as they move on to college. Your teen is more likely to thrive if those are addressed now, before they also attempt the transition to college.
- “Adulting” – Many teens become adults without necessarily knowing what that means. We can provide services to help young people prepare for this transition, with what they need to become fully independent adults.
- Transitions Counseling and Coping Skills – Even if a child is not currently struggling with a mental health challenge, the transition to adulthood is difficult. Counseling can help point them in the right direction and give them the tools they need to thrive.
Of course your child can receive therapy if they need it as they move along to college. But will they seek it? Right now, while you’re able to provide them with the direction they need, and you’re in a better position to see them, know what they need, and help them forward.
