Couples Therapy in Long Island with Dr. Marc Shulman and Dr. Atara Wertentheil

Couples Therapy in Long Island with Dr. Marc Shulman and Dr. Atara Wertentheil

Relationships are a commitment between two unique individuals. No two people are exactly the same. There are similarities and differences, likes and dislikes, and characteristics that differ within couples – all of which can contribute to compatibility and contentment.

It is because couples are made up of two individuals that problems can arise as well, and one of the challenges with many forms of couples therapy in Long Island is that they often focus on the relationship as one single entity, rather than two interesting people that have chosen to pursue a life together.

Relationship Building and Couples Counseling on Long Island

When a relationship runs into challenges, it is often difficult to find ways to overcome those issues without significant self-reflection, hard work, and the willingness to change. As couples therapists in Long Island, we work with couples that need this extra help.

Our role is to treat you both as individuals, while also looking at the way you interact as a couple. Using a form of therapy called Complementary Dynamic Experiential Learning, or CDEL, our goal is to provide couples therapy for those on Long Island that is:

  • Informative – We’ll work to develop an understanding of each partner in the relationship and to find new ways of understanding your relationship challenges that will also help you learn more about yourself.
  • Safe – We’ll create a judgement-free space so that you can talk about any issues without the fear of being judged.
  • Effective – We’ll develop a plan based on your specific needs as a couple and as individuals.

Some sessions will include both partners. Others will be conducted individually so that you feel like you have a bit more freedom to speak and learn. Throughout, we’ll help each of you learn more about yourselves, not just your partners, so that you can ultimately heal the relationship and make it stronger and more satisfying.
