There is more than one type of depression. For many, bipolar disorder is one of the most stressful and confusing, because it has ups and downs that are atypical of other forms of depression and affect the success of treatment.
As depression counselors on Long Island, we have worked with many men and women that have struggled with bipolar disorder, and worked with them to try to control the symptoms and feel relief from their depression.
Through a series of therapeutic strategies, we have helped those that need a bipolar disorder treatment on Long Island get the help they need, and we would be happy to meet you to discuss you or your family member’s challenges.
What is Bipolar Disorder?
The term “bipolar” has become a buzzword for “emotional.” But actual bipolar disorder is very different. Those that struggle with bipolar disorder have periods of depression, as well as periods of “mania,” where a person is filled with energy and may engage in “manic” behaviors that include jumping from task to task or topic to topic (in conversation), engaging in risky behaviors, focusing on goal oriented activities with tremendous energy, inflated self-esteem, and more.
Bipolar disorder is also known as “manic depression.” The episodes of mania and emotional swings make it very different from other types of disorder, which means a unique treatment is necessary to help reduce it.
Treatment for Bipolar Disorder with Long Island Psychology
We use an approach to therapy that is slightly different than others. We use a combination of several successful, well researched strategies to tailor solutions that work best for you. Our Long Island therapy sessions use what’s known as Dynamic Experiential Learning, which integrates principles from many well known psychology theories, including:
- Psychodynamic Theory
- Positive Psychology
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
The approach, however, is more personalized. Traditional bipolar disorder counseling and therapy doesn’t account for individual differences, and in our therapy, we try to make sure that your own unique experience and personality is a part of the depression therapy.
