Atara Wertentheil, Ph.D.
Clinical Psychologist
Through years of training, I have had the opportunity to develop my clinical skills while working with children, adolescents, emerging adults, and adult populations in outpatient mental health, private clinic, and university settings. I received my masters in Mental Health Counseling and my doctorate in Counseling Psychology from Fordham University Graduate School of Education. I was also the recipient of an award from the American Psychological Association’s Section on College and University Counseling Centers recognizing my work with the college population.
I work with diverse individuals on:
- Family and Relationship Issues
- Anxiety and Depression
- Stress Management
- Mindfulness
- Multicultural and Diversity Issues
- Identity Development
- Life Transitions
- The Development of Coping, Assertiveness, and Emotion Regulation Skills.
Using an integrative relational approach, I guide clients through the process of self-discovery, while honoring and respecting that they are experts on their own lives and know themselves best. I consider and illuminate the unique holistic essence of each client and aim to cultivate a safe and productive therapeutic relationship. It’s scary to take that first step, but I’m here to support my clients on the curative journey towards self awareness, wholeness, and relief.
When one feels deflated, unmotivated, powerless or overwhelmed, enacting change and confronting challenges can be especially tough. In my work, I help clients to embrace vulnerability, realize and utilize their internal and external resources, discover their voice, and reach their full potential. Moreover, I wholeheartedly love working with people! This allows me to connect with a variety of populations in order to help them lead more satisfying and authentic lives.

I approach each session with an open-minded mentality. Making the choice to begin counseling can sometimes feel challenging on many levels. My priority is ensuring that my clients feel understood and supported throughout their treatment. Based on an individual’s needs and strengths, I utilize a variety of evidence-based treatment models that I feel will yield optimal progress. I have helped individuals overcome challenges related to depression, anxiety, relationship issues, trauma/PTSD, codependency, addictive behaviors, gender dysphoria, grief, family conflict as well as many other issues that stem from biological and environmental sources.
I feel grateful to work in a profession where I can assist individuals who are seeking to improve their overall wellbeing. The highlight of my job is helping others successfully identify and utilize their own strengths for self-improvement while incorporating effective coping strategies.
