Our Psychotherapy and Couples Counseling Services in Garden City, NY

Here at Long Island Psychology, we do not believe there is a right or wrong time to seek support. While some or our clients come to us when they’re experiencing a mental health emergency, others schedule appointments so that together we can help them work on themselves. You do not need a diagnosable mental health disorder to get support, yet we’re also available for those that are severely struggling.

It is because we see a broad range of clients that our approach to therapy is a bit different from some of the other Garden City psychologists in the region. We approach our clients like individuals, and seek to get to know you as a person in order to determine what style of psychotherapy or counseling would best address your needs and your struggles. That is why we offer many different types of therapy, including:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) – CBT is the premier choice for many different mental health challenges, addressing both the thoughts and behaviors of those struggling with anxiety, depression, and more.
  • Dynamic Experiential Learning – An approach created by Dr. Shulman, dynamic experiential learning integrates components from CBT, psychodynamic theory, and positive psychology to address a person’s learned experiences both past and present.
  • Positive Psychology – This very popular method of therapy is focused specifically on positivity and contentment, which so many people with or without diagnosable disorders are looking to achieve.
  • Resilience Training – We live in a world that can be stressful. Resilience training teaches you how to cope with stress, create “grit,” and even grow as a person.
  • Marriage Counseling – Drs. Shulman and Wertentheil also provide couples counseling services in Garden City, working with couples at any stage in their relationship or marriage to communicate better, build trust, and more.

We may also find that there is another method that makes more sense based on what you’re struggling with, your personal history, and more. We believe that it’s important to get to know you as an individual, and our Garden City therapy services are built around determining what makes the most sense for your specific struggles, your background, and even your personality. It’s one of the ways that we make sure you’re getting the exact help you need.

What We Treat – Therapy for Different Conditions

At Long Island Psychology, we do not believe that you need to be diagnosed with a mental health condition to benefit from treatment, and we encourage you to contact us no matter what you may find yourself struggling with, how severe the condition may be, and more. We’ll talk to you about what’s going on in your life and determine what we can do to help.

With that in mind, there are many common mental health conditions that can afflict someone at some point in their life. There are 22,000 people in Garden City, New York, and a plurality have experienced a mental health condition at some point in their adult lives. Some of the conditions that we treat include, but are not limited to:

  • Anxiety – Including generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, PTSD, and OCD.
  • Depression – Including bipolar disorder, major depressive episodes, and others.
  • Addiction – Including alcohol addiction, substance abuse, sex addiction, gambling addiction.

We can also support you if you have ADHD, or if you need help with behavioral or personality disorder in an adult or child. We work with children, adults, seniors, and families. With our couples counseling services, we are available to provide everything from guidance before you get married to divorce prevention and other support services.

Our resilience training is also often used by those without a diagnosable condition, but who may be struggling with work stress, lack of direction, or something else that makes them feel like they need help with coping with the challenges that they are or may face in life.

Psychologists are primarily focused on your mental health. We do not prescribe medication (though if we feel like you would benefit, we will let you know), and instead use highly researched therapies and approaches that are known to be successful in treating a variety of mental health conditions and life challenges. Studies show that these approaches are so powerful, they can change a person’s brain chemistry in ways that make them happier and emotionally healthier.

Why Choose Long Island Psychology?

You deserve to be as happy and healthy as you can, and mental health services are a form of healthcare that far too many people ignore or fail to take advantage of. Not only is your mental health important, but it is also directly linked to both your physical health and your willingness and ability to care for your physical health. That makes it arguably as important or more so than diet or exercise.

But the success of treating your mental health depends largely on your connection to your Garden City therapist, and that is why at Long Island Psychology, one of the roles we play is to try to help you make sure that you are getting the right amount of care that is personalized to you. We want to get to know you, provide you with actionable items that you can do to help relieve some of your challenges, and work with you as your support system until you feel you’re taking control back over your life.

Dr. Marc Shulman started Long Island Psychology over 10 years ago with the goal of working with individuals in and around Garden City that are looking for this personalized approach. We believe in and use empirically validated psychotherapy techniques, but we also believe that your personal experiences play a very important role in how to find relief and get the treatment you need.

Together with his therapy team, Long Island Psychology is here to work with individuals, couples, families, children, seniors, and more, to give you the direction you need to put your life on track the way you envisioned it. Give us a call today to learn more, or to speak to one of our therapists and schedule your first appointment.

FAQ About Our Garden City Therapists

Q: Can I Choose My Therapist?

A: Yes, you can talk to us if you have a preference with who your therapist may be. If you’d like to get to know our therapists to see if there is one that fits your comfort level better, we can find a way to arrange that as well.

Q: Are You Covered By Insurance?

A: While we are not in a specific network, some insurance companies are able to reimburse your treatment as an “out of network” provider. We can discuss what this means and how to see if you qualify, but it is recommended that you contact your own insurance company to get more details as these can differ not only between insurance companies, but also between plans.

Q: Are You LGBTQ+ Friendly?

A: Yes. We will do our best to create an environment where you feel safe, and are also always confidential.
