Therapist for Phone Addiction and Technology Dependency on Long Island

by Apr 24, 2024Long Island Therapy

What if You Could Be Present in the Moment? What if You Could Recapture a Love for Reality?

Addiction comes in many forms. We at Long Island Psychology work with those struggling with all types of addiction, and help people that are looking to overcome mental health challenges. But what if your addiction wasn’t so easily labeled? What if it was an addiction that was not only normalized, but laughed at?

That’s what seems to be happening with phone addiction. Many, many people across Long Island are on their phone “too much” – a poorly defined metric, but one that is undeniably affecting their mental health and happiness. If you or a family member seems to be struggling with phone addiction, please contact Long Island Psychology, today.

How Can You Be Addicted to a Phone?

Most of us that have phones – or friends/family with phones – know how often the average person spends on their cell phone. The average American spends 4.5 hours on their phones – more than 1/3rd of the average person’s “awake time” during the day. That is a lot of time on phones, and if a person also has school or is at work, that means that there are only a few free hours in the day where a person is not using their phone in some form.

When someone is on their phone too much:

  • They’re not present in their life.
  • They are not aware of the world around them.
  • They can develop anxiety or depression, especially with social media use.

What we often see when someone has signs of phone addiction is that they also experience some of the same symptoms as someone with substance abuse and gambling addiction: a craving for their phone, irritability around getting off their phone, relationship difficulties, checking behavior, and more.

But perhaps, even more importantly, life satisfaction seems to drop significantly. Very few people spend all day on their phone and go to sleep feeling like their day was well spend and happy. We need in person time. We need outdoor time. We need to be present with our friends and family. We need to be engaging in fun and interesting activities.

When we have screen addictions, those are not typically possible.

How Would Therapy for Phone Addiction Work?

Every individual is different. Some people are on their phones because they are overwhelmed by life and need an escape. Some are on their phones because they are addicted to interactions on social media. Some are on their phones because they are unhappy, or are trying to avoid people or things. Everyone has their own unique reasons, which means that there is no universal way a therapist would treat phone addiction across all individuals.

At Long Island Psychology, we approach each patient uniquely and as their own individual. We talk to them about daily life, what makes them turn to their phones, and what they need to help them remain present and be happier. For teens and children, we may also integrate parents, or look for ways to help them with issues that arise from excessive social media use, such as stress, anxiety, eating disorders, and more.

At Long Island Psychology, we believe it is our role to be there to assist you in experiencing a more joyful, more positive, more present life. If you or someone you love is struggling with phone addiction on Long Island, please contact us today and let’s look for ways to help get back to enjoying the reality around us once again.
