Work-Life Balance Therapy on Long Island

For the version of you that’s always managing something, and rarely just living. You can be doing everything right on paper: the job, the family, the calendar that somehow still holds together, and still feel like you’re failing at all of it simultaneously. Work-life balance work has less to do with time management and more to do with understanding why “enough” never feels like enough.

Treatment for Anxiety in NY

Anxiety rarely shows up the way people expect. It’s not always a panic attack in a parking lot. More often, it’s the meeting you rehearse in your head for three days beforehand. The text you write and rewrite before sending. The what-ifs that run in the background no matter how good things actually are.

Some people who come to see us for anxiety have already tried to manage it on their own: breathing exercises, avoidance, sheer willpower. Sometimes those tools are genuinely enough, and if that’s what you need, we can help you build more of them. For others, the anxiety keeps resurfacing no matter how many tools they add, and that’s usually a sign there’s a question underneath worth answering: why does your mind do this in the first place.

For the anxiety that keeps coming back, it helps to know it isn’t a flaw to be white-knuckled through. It’s information about how your nervous system learned to protect you, sometimes from things that stopped being dangerous a long time ago. Understanding that history is one path to lasting change; building stronger practical tools is another. We’ll figure out together which one, or both, actually fits what you need.

Below, you’ll find the specific ways anxiety tends to show up: generalized anxiety, social anxiety, panic, OCD, phobias, and PTSD-related anxiety, and how we work with each one using CBT, ACT, Psychodynamic Therapy, Positive Psychology, and Dynamic Experiential Learning.

About Our New York Anxiety Therapy Services

NY is a diverse state. The culture, lifestyle, and stressors vary. NYC, Albany, Buffalo, Rochester, Yonkers, and of course here on Long Island, we’re all faced with distinctive challenges on a day to day basis that are unique to our personal history, or professions, and the support systems we have available.

Anyone can develop anxiety. But not everyone has the same experiences. That’s why it’s important to work with a psychologist that recognizes what makes people unique, and one that tailors the treatment to you as an individual. Dr. Marc Shulman take that approach.

We offer both in person and remote/online therapy services to anyone in New York State that finds themselves struggling. We are local to Long Island, with offices in Garden City and Rockville Centre. That makes it possible for clients in places like Freeport, Oceanside, Hempstead, and even Queens to come to our office if they need help.

We are also available via phone or telehealth video for anyone located anywhere in New York State. It’s what allows us to treat those in New York City, Syracuse, and of course any city, town, or community located anywhere in NY. We’re a great option if you’re in an area without access to many psychologists, or if you want to match with someone that will listen, provide guidance, and help you find the help you need.

Types of Anxiety

There is more than one type of anxiety, and more than one way to experience anxiety. Although there are symptoms common among anyone in New York that struggles with it, anxiety is also a very personal condition, where each person may experience different degrees of physical and mental symptoms.

Most diagnosable anxiety falls under one of the following conditions:

  • Generalized Anxiety Disorder – GAD is a persistent and ongoing feeling of anxiety (physical, mental, or both) that appears ever-present and touches most activities you do.
  • Social Anxiety Disorder – Also known as “social phobia,” those with this type of anxiety experience general fear, shyness, or anxiety attacks in social situations.
  • Panic Disorder – Panic attacks are periods of intense, overwhelming anxiety that may mimic more serious health conditions. Those with multiple panic attacks may have panic disorder.
  • Post Traumatic Stress Disorder – After a traumatic event, a person may have anxious responses as a result of experiences related to that event. This is commonly called PTSD.
  • Phobias – Phobias are intense fears of a specific object or event, such as a fear of spiders, or a fear of heights. They are typically independent of other forms of anxiety.

Anyone can experience anxiety. As many as 30 to 40% of Americans mention experiencing some form of anxiety every year. It is an unfortunately normal part of so many people’s lives – so normal, that it’s not uncommon to live with it without seeking help. But anxiety responds so well to treatment, that it is highly recommended that anyone that feels they have anxiety in NY consider getting the help they need.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this the same as stress management?

Related, but different. Stress management treats symptoms in the moment. This work addresses the underlying patterns that keep recreating the imbalance in the first place.

Do you work with executives who have limited scheduling flexibility?

Yes, including early morning, evening, and telehealth options.

Is this only for working parents?

No. We see working parents, but also single professionals, caregivers, and anyone whose life has become organized entirely around obligation.

How is this different from regular anxiety therapy?

There’s real overlap, since work-life imbalance often runs on anxious thinking. This work specifically targets the patterns that keep you tethered to work and unable to rest, whether or not anxiety is the primary diagnosis.

Do you offer telehealth for this work?

Yes, and many professionals with unpredictable schedules find telehealth easier to keep consistent than in-person sessions.

How many sessions does this typically take?

It varies. Some patients want a short, focused course of practical tools; others want to understand the longer-standing drive behind the pattern, which takes more time.

Can this help if my job itself is the actual problem, not just my reaction to it?

Yes. Part of the work is figuring out whether the imbalance is a response to genuinely unreasonable demands or a pattern you’d bring to almost any job, and those call for different solutions.

Is this covered by insurance?

We’re a self-pay practice and provide superbill receipts for out-of-network reimbursement.

What if I don't have an obvious mental health issue, just chronic stress?

That’s a common and valid reason to start. You don’t need a diagnosis to benefit from this work.

Can couples do this work together if work-life balance is a shared issue?

Yes, when the imbalance is affecting the relationship, we can incorporate that directly, sometimes alongside our couples work.

Do you see business owners as well as employees?

Yes. Business owners often carry a specific version of this pattern, since there’s rarely a clear line between “work hours” and everything else.
