Why It’s Important to Live Autonomously

by Oct 27, 2017Self Esteem and Confidence

There is value to knowing how others see you, and understanding that how the world sees you may not be how you see yourself. It can help open your mind to your behaviors, thoughts, feelings, and more.

But while it is important to integrate that feedback into your life so that you can think critically about who you are and where you are in life, in the end, it is important to be you – to live life based on what makes you happy and what fills your needs, while minimizing how much your decisions are based on the views of others.

Live Your Way

One of the most important goals for a person to achieve is learning to live the way that will make them the happiest, unencumbered by what others may think about them.  Those that make a conscious choice to live each moment on their own terms will typically live a much happier life.

  • Engage in activities that make you happy.
  • Spend time with the people that make you happiest.
  • Live the lifestyle that you want.

If you’re an adult that likes Pokemon Cards, a young mom that likes crochet, a grown man that likes staying up until 3am – as long as you can engage in the activities responsibly, you should embrace who you are and what you love, without worrying about what other people will think.

The Responsibility of Adulthood

This isn’t to say that you should ignore your life’s responsibilities. Growing up means taking care of the things that need to be taken care of, including your family, your work – even yourself. You may want to eat McDonalds every day, but you have an obligation to yourself to stay healthy, no matter how delicious you find their burgers.

But as long as the activities you engage in are in line with what you want out of life, and allow you to still handle all of your most important responsibilities, if you can learn to be living a life that is meaningful and fulfilling to you and your dreams/desires, you’ll find that you are far happier with the way you feel and much less resentful for what you don’t have.
