The Value of Couples Counseling in NY

Any relationship can have its struggles. Even the most “perfect” union will have its bad days and challenges that need to be overcome, and most relationships are far from perfect. When you put two unique individuals together, each with their own needs and backgrounds, there are always going to be issues that arise.

For the health of your marriage – and your mental health – addressing those issues within your relationship is an important part of improving your quality of life, strengthening the bond between you, and ensuring that, no matter your future together, you have a stronger foundation from which to move forward.

That’s what couples counseling is for. It’s not just about “saving” marriages on the brink of divorce (although that is a benefit), nor is it solely for voicing your displeasures at each other. What couples therapy is, is a chance for couples to gain clarity about themselves and their relationship and in many cases helping them to grow together at various stages of the relationship.

We’ve helped those that have recently divorced learn to better co-parent, and we’ve worked with new couples, still dating, that are finding they need tools to help them grow together or overcome a roadblock. Couples counseling is for any relationship – even platonic ones – that wants to find a way to move forward in a way that is stronger and better than before.

Who We Are

Long Island Psychology was founded by Dr. Marc Shulman. Marc is an experienced psychotherapist, and someone that pioneered an approach to therapy called “Dynamic Experiential Learning.” In relationships, this is called “Complementary Dynamic Experiential Learning,” or CDEL.

CDEL integrates different therapy approaches, including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), positive psychology, Gottman, and others. CDEL adapts to the needs of the couple. Rather than see your relationship as one entity, Dr. Shulman’s techniques see you as two separate and distinct individuals that are learning their own needs and drives, and how those can integrate within the context of a couple.

As the approach progresses, not only can you improve your relationship, but you learn more about yourself and your own mental health and needs in the process. CDEL is one of many approaches that Dr. Shulman may take when addressing your treatment.

Together with his team of therapists, our couples counselors here at Long Island Psychology will continue to work with you until you both feel that you are making progress in your relationship and your personal life. If we believe CDEL is not the best approach, we’re also more than happy to alter the approach using other empirically valid solutions. Each relationship is different, and so too is the way we address each couple.

Couples Counseling Services and Support for NY Relationships

Every approach we use for marriage counseling is catered to where you are in your relationship and what challenges you see yourself with, so while we have specific services in the field, we encourage everyone that feels they may benefit from our support contact us, and we are happy to work with you and relationship.

Still, there are some themes to our couples counseling services, based on common reasons that people seek out therapy. At Long Island Psychology, these include the following:

Divorce Prevention

Couples counseling can be beneficial at any time in a relationship. But for so many people, seeking out New York couples counseling tends to be a choice they make when their marriage is truly struggling – often couples that have already decided to separate, or feel that they’re on the verge of separation.

One of the words you hear often in a relationship counseling is the need to work on “communication.” The word may feel cliché, but communication is so much more than just talking, and when a relationship is on the brink of divorce, that often means that the couple has struggled to not only share their feelings, but listen to and appreciate the feelings of others.

Throughout couples counseling, we work to build a foundation that essentially re-strengthens the relationship, looking at not only how you got to where you are today, but what you can do to make sure that the future of your marriage is stronger.

Overcoming Infidelity

Infidelity is one of the most intimate breakdowns of trust, and it is one that is often hard to overcome. But regaining that trust is often possible, as long as both partners work together as a team. Our solutions here at Long Island Psychology are not going to try to erase or minimize the infidelity, but they are here to examine everything from the causes to the solutions that will help you move forward.

Marriage Counseling for Improved Communication and Trust

In NY, marriage counseling doesn’t have to wait until there are marriage-ending challenges. Sometimes, they’re there to help you learn more skills as a couple so that you never reach that point.

So many couples find that marriage counseling is their opportunity as a couple to finally share things they didn’t feel safe sharing in the past. It’s a chance to explore more effective ways to build upon what is already there, and explore what had led you to wherever you are in your marriage at the moment.

All couples – including “healthy” couples – run into issues and can use someone to help them move forward. Long Island Psychology is here to help.

Pre-Marital Counseling

Marriage works when it’s built upon a strong foundation. There is no better time to create that foundation than before the marriage has even started, especially since any issues that you have (or may develop) often exist in the early stages.

Pre-marital counseling is there for those couples that could use a bit more guidance as they move onto this next step. We help you develop your partnership, learn more about what each other needs, and then use the skills you develop to create a happy, long lasting marriage that is resilient to issues that may arise.

Other NY Relationship Counseling Services

Our couples counselors, Dr. Shulman and Dr. Wertentheil, focus heavily on relationships and marriages and that has helped them open up more doors for those seeking help in their relationships. Some of the additional NY couples counseling services available both in person and online include:

  • Relationship Coaching – A service for otherwise healthy couples that would love to continue to find new ways to grow.
  • Individual Relationship Counseling – Many issues in relationships stem from a person’s individual relationship history. For those that are single, in a relationship, or married, our individual relationship counseling services involve seeing you one on one to work on your presence in relationships.
  • Relationship Group Therapy – On occasion, we create group therapy sessions and workshops that work with couples from all walks of life in an affordable, effective way, using social support from others to help you through your marriage.
  • Traditional Therapy – What affects a relationship is not always limited to what is within the relationship itself. There may be other extraneous factors that affect the health of a couple and their ability to effectively communicate and trust, such as the mental health of one or both partners. A relationship is made up of two unique individuals. Therapy can help address any issues that may be holding you back from putting yourself into the marriage.

Being a NY couples counselor means opening up our doors for whatever your needs may be, including those that may not be traditionally what people view marriage counseling to be. Our hope is that we can be there for your relationship and help you get the best you can from your marriage.

NY Couples Counseling FAQ

Can You Save My Marriage?
It depends on you. Couples counseling is as useful as what both partners are willing to put into it, as well as who you both are as individuals. Some couples are not meant to be together. Others are the perfect match, and need someone to help repair their marriage. Our services are there to help you be the in the best possible place for the next stage of your relationship, whatever that may be.
My Partner Doesn’t Want Couples Counseling, But I Do. What’s Next?
Couples counseling works best when both partners are ready to commit to it. But we do have individual relationship counseling that can be useful for those that are struggling in their relationship possibly due to issues that can be addressed on an individual level. Sometimes, partners are also more receptive to couples counseling when they have a chance to go to one session. Also, because we offer online remote couples counseling, there’s less inconvenience, increasing the receptiveness to those reluctant to go.
Can I Choose My Therapist?
Usually, yes. If you prefer to see Dr. Shulman or Dr. Wertentheil, let us know and we’ll be happy to see if scheduling is available.
How Long Does Couples Counseling Take?
There are rarely rules around couples counseling. Some partners find that talking to someone ongoing, on a weekly, biweekly, or monthly basis is helpful for their marriage even when their main problems are addressed. Others are looking for us to “solve” a problem, and then they prefer to move on. Let’s first talk about where you are in your marriage, and then we can discuss how long treatment might be.
