Mindfulness-Based Interventions for Anxiety in Pre-Teens

by Jan 25, 2024Child Psychology

The “pre-teen” era is a time in a child’s life where they are developing rapidly emotionally, physically, and psychologically. It is also a sensitive time, where some of the mental health strengths and challenges they have now may continue as they develop into adults. Anxiety is a common issue during this timeframe, which is why this age group is a great time to consider interventions.

There are many approaches to pre-teen anxiety management that we can consider in our sessions. But one approach that is popular is known as mindfulness-based interventions, which have emerged as a promising approach in managing anxiety at this developmental stage.

What is Anxiety in Pre-Teens?

Anxiety in pre-teens manifests as excessive worry, fear, or nervousness that interferes with daily activities. It can take various forms, including:

  • Generalized Anxiety Disorder – Characterized by excessive worry about various aspects of daily life.
  • Social Anxiety Disorder – Involves intense fear of social situations and being judged by others.
  • Specific Phobias – Intense fear of specific objects or situations.

Pre-teens, typically aged between 9 and 12, are at a stage where they begin to experience more complex emotional and social challenges, making them more susceptible to anxiety. In some cases, it may also be difficult to notice, as parents may assume it is just their child being shy or less social than other children. Even if that were the case, some mental health strategies can have long lasting benefits that a child can take with them into their life.

The Role of Mindfulness in Managing Anxiety

Mindfulness involves being fully present and engaged in the moment, aware of one’s thoughts and feelings without judgment. This practice can help pre-teens:

  • Recognize and Understand Their Anxiety – Mindfulness helps in identifying anxious thoughts and feelings, creating an opportunity for children to understand and address them.
  • Develop Coping Skills – Regular mindfulness practice can equip pre-teens with better coping mechanisms to manage anxiety.
  • Reduce Stress – By promoting relaxation and present-moment awareness, mindfulness can lower overall stress levels.

These are all benefits of mindfulness that will help the pre-teen develop healthier coping strategies in adulthood as well.

Implementing Mindfulness-Based Interventions

Mindfulness interventions can be integrated into a pre-teen’s routine in various ways. Some of the ways we might use here at Long Island Psychology include:

  • Guided Mindfulness Exercises – Including breathing techniques and guided imagery.
  • Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) – Combining cognitive therapy with mindfulness strategies.
  • Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) – Programs designed to reduce stress and anxiety through mindfulness practices.

You can also work on teaching your child mindfulness yourself. When it appears their emotions are high, have them learn to stop and tell you what they’re feeling and experiencing throughout their mind and body. Once they are more aware of those feelings, they are more likely to be able to control them in the future.

Mindfulness-based interventions offer a promising approach to managing anxiety in pre-teens, helping them to navigate this critical developmental phase with greater ease and confidence. With the right support and strategies, mindfulness can be an effective tool in alleviating anxiety and enhancing overall well-being.
