I have been a Long Island psychologist for many years. I received a doctorate in psychology (Psy.D.) from Yeshiva University here in New York and spent several years as an Associate Research Scientist at Yale. My work is focused on helping others repair their relationships or overcome their stress and/or mental health issues.
Becoming a Long Island psychologist was a dream of mine for years, and is now a reality that I don’t take lightly. Yet one of the areas I wanted to dedicate myself to most was couples. That is because, in many, ways, relationships and connections to others play a role in every component of a more positive, happier life – and vice versa.
My Approach to Couples Counseling
There is an interplay between relationships and life contentment that I strongly believe in, both in the way that a person’s life as an individual affects their relationship, and in the way a person’s relationship affects who they are as an individual.
My process for couples counseling with my Long Island patients, for example, consists of what I call “Complementary Dynamic Experiential Learning.” You can find a full example of what this entails on the my approach page. But to summarize:
- Repairing a relationship involves examination of the individual.
- An individual’s role and connection to the relationship affects the outcome of that individual.
- Couples are better helped when they are free to speak openly.
- Every couple is different, and every couple needs to be treated differently.
This approach integrates real, concrete psychological principles but also does one thing differently that most couples counselors do not: It seeks to learn more about the individual, both in the context of the relationship and as a separate entity, since a couple is a partnership between two distinct people, not simply the examination of the relationship they built.
