What Makes Routines So Important for Children?

by Feb 22, 2024Child Psychology

As adults, we sometimes find the idea of a “routine” to be somewhat monotonous and boring. But for children, routines are an important part of development. They play a role in a child’s emotional, cognitive, and social development, with benefits that can last a lifetime.

About Routines for Children

Routines play an important role in the development of many different skills, while also serving as a way to help children manage emotions and focus on/complete tasks. Some of the many benefits of routines for children include, but are not limited to:

  • Security – For children, the world can often feel large, confusing, and new. Routines give a sense of security in an otherwise overwhelming world. It helps them know what to do and what to expect at any given time, and provides a sense of familiarity and reassurance that makes them feel at ease.
  • Introduction to Healthy Habits – Similarly, the activities within a routine are typically habits that you want children to have, such as when to brush teeth, when to go to bed, when to read, etc., which develops healthy habits. For tasks that can be stressful, like getting your child to eat, a set timeframe and time can initiate hunger and teach them to eat faster. All these are beneficial for your child’s development.
  • Enhancing Learning – Regular schedules for educational activities, playtime, and rest ensure that children have ample opportunity to learn new skills, explore their interests, and rejuvenate their minds and bodies. This balanced approach to daily activities is essential for cognitive development and academic success.
  • Enhancing Family Bonds – Routines also play a pivotal role in strengthening family relationships. Shared routines, such as family dinners or weekend outings, create opportunities for meaningful interactions and shared experiences. These moments become cherished memories and reinforce the bonds between family members, contributing to a nurturing and supportive family environment.
  • Building Time Management Skills – As children grow and navigate their routines, they begin to understand the concept of time management and the importance of self-discipline. Learning to transition from one activity to another within a set framework helps children develop organizational skills and a sense of responsibility. These skills are invaluable as they progress through school and eventually enter adulthood.

In the tapestry of childhood, routines are the threads that weave together a stable, nurturing environment conducive to growth and development. Far from being restrictive, routines offer a structure that frees children to explore, learn, and thrive within a secure framework.

As parents, our role is to establish and maintain these routines, guiding our children through the complexities of life with a steady hand and a heart full of love. In doing so, we not only support their development but also enrich the familial bonds that form the essence of a happy, healthy home.
