Our Unique Approach
get startedDynamic Experiential Learning (DEL)
The therapy that Long Island psychologists / therapists Dr. Marc Shulman and Dr. Atara Wertentheil offer utilizes a unique approach called Dynamic Experiential Learning (DEL) which was developed by integrating the wisdom of some of the finest psychologists the field has to offer with his own clinical and life observations.
This approach recognizes that there are critical underlying issues that develop early in life that can continue to manifest in adult years and interfere with current functioning. The treatment focuses on experiential learning in one’s present life, which enables new perspectives on one’s interactions with the world to emerge. It integrates various concepts from psychodynamic theory with various cognitive behavioral techniques, such as positive psychology.
Perhaps most importantly, it recognizes that there is no one specific formula that can be universally applied to all people. Therefore, the treatment begins with a detailed evaluation that leads to the conceptualization of an individualized tailored treatment plan.
It is based solely on the presenting challenges of each person and does not impose “cookie cutter” interventions to unique individuals.
Complementary Dynamic Experiential Learning (CDEL) (Couples Counseling)
The couples counseling / marriage counseling that Dr. Marc Shulman and Long Island Psychology offers is called Complimentary Dynamic Experiential Learning (CDEL).
It is an approach that was developed by integrating the wisdom of some of the finest psychologists the field has to offer with his own clinical and life observations.
This treatment emphasizes that significant relationships consist of two separate individuals that must achieve their own self-actualization within the context of a couple. The treatment focuses on assisting each member of the couple to identify the obstacles that interfere with their optimal functioning and exploring if the resolution of these individual challenges complements one another. By encouraging experiential learning opportunities it enables new perspectives on one’s interactions with the world to emerge.
Therapy begins with a joint session where a detailed history of the relationship and an assessment of the current issues are conducted. A treatment plan will then be developed where a determination will be made as to how to proceed with therapy. In some cases therapy will involve separate meetings to identify and resolve individual issues with periodic couples sessions to assess progress and promote healthy relationship functioning. Both members of the couple must agree that all information discussed in the individual sessions will be open for sharing during the couples sessions.
In other cases therapy will be involve joint sessions that focus on each individual, while the other partner observes, listens and responds to their partner. In all cases, however, the goal is for the couple to achieve a clear resolution as to how they want to proceed with the relationship.
The psychotherapy that Dr. Marc Shulman and Dr. Atara Wertentheil offer is designed to help you overcome obstacles and achieve more satisfaction from life and relationships. If you have any questions or would like to schedule an appointment call (516) 732-0273.
