Mental Health and New York: Finding Access to the Psychologist that Best Suits You

by Jan 20, 2021Uncategorized

Mental health knows no boundaries. Millions of people in NY suffer from anxiety, depression, addiction, and other mental health issues, just as there are millions of people throughout the United States that also find themselves struggling.

But one way in which NY is doing better than other states is with the openness to receiving care. Residents of New York tend to have a better understanding of the value of mental healthcare, and show more of a willingness to seek it out. That is a great thing for the state, as it opens up doors for a more productive, happier life.

Yet the willingness to find a therapist is only one part of the process. It is also important to find one that you have a rapport with – someone that will match you and your needs. That is something that, in New York, can actually be more challenging, no matter where you may live in the state.

Why New Yorker’s May Struggle to Find The Right Psychologist

NY has a lot of access to mental healthcare. But it also has issues that may make it more difficult to access that care than it would be for those in other states. These include:

  • Some cities in New York have limited access to psychologists. New York is a large state. Outside of NYC and Long Island, most cities and towns have limited access to therapists, which either means traveling to a nearby city or settling for one nearby.
  • Traveling to and from a therapist’s office can be challenging. In NYC and the surrounding area, traveling even a few miles can be a tremendous challenge. If the therapist you connect best with isn’t located within walking distance, it may take time to reach their office.
  • Finding a NY therapist that offers the treatments you’re looking for, or treats your condition, may be difficult. There are many approaches one can take to address mental health, and finding the therapists that offer the most well researched, effective therapies may not be easy.
  • In small towns, it may not feel safe to meet with a local therapist. The smaller the city, the harder it is to find one that allows you to feel safe to talk openly. Everyone knows each other. If you cannot feel comfortable being as open and honest with the psychologist as possible, it may be harder to get the help you need.

The best way to get help with addiction, depression, anxiety, marital problems, and more is to know find a psychologist you feel a connection with – one that both offers what you need and one that you feel comfortable with.

How We at Long Island Psychology Provide Therapy for All of New York

Although we do have two locations for in-person therapy on Long Island, we wanted to make sure that those away from our main offices (Garden City and Rockville Centre) – whether they’re a bit of a drive, like in places like Huntington, or they are far further out like Buffalo where travel is not possible.

It’s why we decided to offer Telehealth remote therapy, available via phone or video, to open ourselves up to those anywhere in the entirety of New York State. We can meet exclusively via phone or video, or – if you’re a bit of a drive away but otherwise have access to our offices – we can create a hybrid approach with in-person care when you want it, and remote therapy when you do not.

By offering this service, we hope that those that need a NY psychologist find themselves able to connect with us so that we can better suit your needs. NYC, Albany, Syracuse, Yonkers – wherever you may be, our team of psychologists is happy to help, solving many of the challenges associated with accessing the right care. Give us a call today to get started.
