Generalized Anxiety Disorder
CBT Treatment
Some anxiety is normal. It’s normal to feel anxiety at a job interview. It’s normal to feel anxiety if someone threatens you. It’s normal to feel anxiety on a first date, or right before a big presentation, or when you’re called into your boss’s office and you’re not sure why. In some ways, anxiety is actually healthy.
But some people experience anxiety constantly, with a variety of physical and emotional symptoms that never seem to go away. They may worry about small things. They may feel shaky or uncomfortable as though something is wrong. They may experience more extreme anxiety in “normal” anxiety situations, and more.
These may all be symptoms of Generalized Anxiety Disorder, or GAD, which is a type of constant, persistent anxiety that simply never seems to go away. Although there are several treatments for GAD currently available, one successful strategy that we may consider in therapy is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.
CBT for Generalized Anxiety Disorder: Long Island, NY
At Long Island Psychology, we believe that each individual’s treatment needs to be tailored to them, so while we are big fans of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for anxiety, there may be other treatments to consider, such as Dynamic Experiential Learning.
But CBT is a well researched, goal oriented, actionable way to address certain mental health challenges, and one of the most effective strategies currently available in the field of psychology. CBT for anxiety focuses on:
- Strategies to Avoid Anxious Thoughts – Anxiety is caused almost exclusively by cognitions and thought processes. We use researched strategies to form more productive, realistic, and healthy thoughts, and to change the way your mind responds to information.
- Strategies to Avoid Anxiety Causing Behavior – Anxiety is also known for its behaviors. We’ll look at ways to both reduce the behaviors that cause anxiety, and find behaviors that can help you relieve it.
Cognitive behavioral therapy gives you real ways to start addressing anxiety, and strategies that you can take home with you to control anxiety in your daily life.
