Too Attached to Your Childhood? Remember the Value of Being an Adult

by Feb 17, 2018Social Networking & Relationships

It is not at all uncommon to hear people talk about the glory days of their youth. For some it is high school. For some it is childhood. For some it is college. But no matter what period of time it is, the individual is very attached to that part of their lives even though many years have passed.

Although there is some value to reminiscing positively about the past, others find that they experience a longing for that period of time again, hoping that they can shed their current responsibilities and go back in time to experience the carefree fun of childhood once again. Over time, these individuals may develop dissatisfaction in their adult life as a result.

Realizing Your Adult Benefits

If you are someone that finds that they struggle to get out of their past, it may help to start focusing your energy on realizing the benefits of being an adult; benefits that you simply did not have as a child.

For example, even though you may have more responsibilities, you are also more free to choose how you want to live your life. As a young person, you were limited in how you can live and what rules you had to follow, but as an adult, you create your own rules.

In addition, being an adult means that you are free to do anything you think is fun, often with more financial means available to do it. If you find that you’re not having fun, then you simply need to find a new way to integrate that enjoyment into your life. Your life experience also makes it easier for you to make the decisions that are best for your mental wellness, and you can choose how to make a bigger impact on yourself and those around you that is rarely possible as a child.

Take Time to Realize Your Adult Benefits

There really are many benefits to adulthood that do not exist in childhood, and many ways you can make your adult life more enjoyable. If you’ve been struggling to put those together, then perhaps it would help to see a therapist on Long Island to discuss how to adapt to adulthood and feel more comfortable with who you are now and where you are in life.
